31st Annual Carbonell Awards

Regional Theater Nominations

Top Shows:

"The Tin Pan Alley Rag"

"The Full Monty"

"The Pillowman"

Fort Lauderdale, Jan. 24, 2007-- The musicals “The Tin Pan Alley Rag” at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and “The Full Monty” by the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables lead nominations for the 31st Annual Carbonell Awards with 10 apiece.

The GableStage local premiere of the harrowing drama “The Pillowman” leads plays with six nominations. Three shows each have five: "Dealer's Choice" at Plantation’s Mosaic Theatre Company, the acerbic Edward Albee classic “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at Palm Beach Dramaworks, and the comedy romp “Lend Me a Tenor” at the Caldwell Theatre Company.

Palm Beach theaters led with 48 nominations, followed by 41 for Miami-Dade. Broward troupes picked up 11. Winners will be announced April 9 at the Broward Center, in ceremonies that raise monies for scholarships for area arts students. Advance reservations are currently available online at carbonellawards.org.(click on links below). Box office sales will begin in early February, at 954-462-0222.

The theme for the 31st annual award ceremony is a tribute to the often-unsung designers, stage managers and crews that make the magic of the performing arts possible.

The awards ceremony is produced, directed and choreographed by Jean Ann Ryan and Jean Ann Ryan Productions, with musical direction by Peter Graves and The Peter Graves Orchestras, with guest stars to be announced shortly.

30th Annual

Carbonell Award

Regional Theater Nominees

FORT LAUDERDALE, JAN 11, 2006--The Actors’ Playhouse productions of the Disney Broadway musicals “Aida” with 12 and “Beauty and the Beast” with 11 share commanding leads in the nominations for the 30th annual Carbonell Awards in regional theater.

Beyond that, however, the remainder of the race splintered into one of the largest fields in history, with 45 shows spanning 16 companies up for awards at ceremonies scheduled April 10 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Fort Lauderdale, midway between Miami and the Palm Beaches.

Other front runners include the harrowing dramas “Frozen” at the GableStage with seven, the most for any straight play, six for the revue “Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill, a Musical Voyage,” at Palm Beach Dramaworks, and five apiece for and “That Championship Season” at Dramaworks, “Enchanted April” at The Caldwell Theatre Company and “Songs for a New World” at Actors’ Playhouse.

The awards were moved by the board of directors from November to April to coincide with the region’s cultural season, expanding eligibility for the 30th annual awards to 16 months spanning September, 2004 through December, 2005. To accommodate the extra-long period, categories have six nominations apiece instead of the usual five for this season only.

Multiple nominees

Multiple nominees for the 30th annual awards include Lisa Morgan, nominated three times for Best Actress in a Play, for "Frozen," "Misery" and "Retreat From Moscow," all at GableStage. Todd Allen Durkin is nominated twice, for Best Actor for "Bug" at GableStage, and Best Supporting Actor for "That Championship Season" at Palm Beach Dramaworks. Also up for deuces are Michael McKeever (author, for New Work and Actor/Play), and Rachel Jones, for both Actress ("Johnny Guitar") and Supporting Actress ("Songs for a New World") in a musical. Several directors and designers are also given multiple citations.

The regional theater competitive awards are voted upon by a panel of over two dozen drama critics and theater professionals.

Awards for stock/roadshow theater productions, to be voted upon shortly by a separate panel of working press, will also be presented at the April ceremonies. For more information, visit www.carbonellawards.org.

The 30th annual award ceremonies are produced by Jean Ann Ryan Productions, directed and choreographed by Ms. Ryan, with longtime musical director Peter Graves leading the Peter Graves Orchestra.

Scholarship benefit

The annual award ceremony and related events are also benefits for the Carbonell Award Scholarship Fund, which has distributed over $100,000 to local arts students over the program's history, including $7,500 in 2005. The "award season" events include a scholarship reception to honor scholarship winners and award nominees a week in advance of the ceremony, and a post-show winners' celebration immediately after the show.
