Manuel Carbonell

Internationally renowned sculptor Manuel Carbonell is the creator, namesake and the Grand Benefactor of South Florida's prestigious Carbonell Awards.

Mr. Carbonell designed the original in 1977 and casts each solid bronze statuette at his Miami foundry, donating each to the winners.

Born in 1918 in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Mr. Carbonell attended the Academia Bellas Artes de San Alejandro with other masters Wilfredo Lam and Agustin Cardenas. He graduated in 1945 to become Professor of Drawing and Sculpture.

Later, Mr. Carbonell studied extensively in Spain, Italy and France. We won his first international award in Barcelona, Spain in 1954. He fled Cuba's totalitarian regime in 1959.

Mr. Carbonell's art works now adorn museums, galleries, private collections and public projects throughout the free world. His "Bicentennial Eagle" is part of the Smithsonian Collection.
