Rules & Regulations Gateway Links Below to Complete Policy/Procedure Descriptions Operational Summary Beginning Jan. 1, 2006, the Carbonell Awards regional theater consideration process is modified and patterned after similar award programs in other major theater markets in the nation. This process was adopted after a 20-month period of research including visits to various cities for consultation and to observe their practices in operation, particularly Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. A. Regional Theater. 1. Nominators: Two or three nominating panels may be designated geographically, either north/south (2 panels) or by county (3 panels, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach). Two districts are designated for 2006, the midpoint boundary defined as: From the Atlantic Ocean west along I-595 to U.S. 441, north on U.S. 441 to Commercial Boulevard, west on Commercial to the Sawgrass Expressway. 2. Nominators are appointed via combination of assignees and volunteers on a rotating basis, in advance, to attend one of the first three or four performances (after previews) of an eligible production in each panel's geographic area.. Each nominator independently, without consultation with other panelists, completes a recommendation form containing eligible award categories for each show. 3. Any show achieving a consensus of a recommendation, in any one or more categories, by at least two-thirds of the assigned nominator panel, becomes a "recommended" production. For instance, 4 of 6 nominators "recommend" the production for best lighting design. All elements of the production become eligible for nomination after further attendance by a separate panel of Judges. 4. Recommended productions may be posted on the Carbonell website and may be marketed immediately as "Carbonell Award recommended" by the respective theater or production administration. [This section subject to further input and consideration before implementation.] 4. Judges: Members of a separate judging panel attend shows in both districts/all three counties that achieve "recommended" status by nominators. Participation as judges entails a significant commitment of time and travel expense, particularly on weekends. 5. After the conclusion of the eligibility period (Dec. 31), judges meet and draw up nominations for awards. Judges then complete a final, secret ballot to determine winners. [Beginning Jan. 2007.] B. Stock/Roadshow Theater. Approved media representatives/reviewers will, at the end of the eligibility period (Dec. 31) conduct a multiple-round ballot either in session, via paper ballots, or a combination of both, to determine nominees and winners. Representative procedures are included in the section describing balloting & scoring. C. Arts & Special Achievement Awards Recommendations for special and interdisciplinary awards may be made to the Carbonell board or administration directly, or through representative(s) or committee(s) the board may designate from time to time to screen candidates, maintain policy and procedures, and recommend changes. D. Voters, Defined. 1. Regional Theater: Carbonell voting panel members have a thorough understanding and appreciation of the artistic process, especially relating to theater, whether professionally, academically, the media, as experienced theater goers or arts patrons. 2. Stock/Roadshow: Panel members consist of reviewers and journalists on press lists, as agreed upon by the Carbonell Awards board/administration in agreement with major local media, stock-roadshow presenters and producers, and applicable theater administrations. E. Administration, Defined. 1. The Carbonell Awards is a not for profit (501-c-3) corporation, and an independent regional arts organization representing all of South Florida. All policies, rules and procedures are determined, in due consideration of all interested constituencies and their concerns, by the Carbonell Awards Board of Directors, which is the sole arbiter of the program. Recommendations may be made through any board, administration or committee member, or via correspondence. 2. Directors: The Board of Directors has the full authority and responsibility to develop policies, procedures and regulations for the sound operation of the company in accordance with its mission statement. Members bring strong business and philanthropic interests to the organization to assist raising the profile of South Florida’s regional theater and arts community regionally, nationally and internationally. Representative(s) or committee(s) may be designated by the president or the board from time to time for the purpose of maintaining procedures and recommending changes. See the Administration page.
