Scholarship Program

& Policies

The Carbonell Awards have provided scholarships for over a quarter-century to deserving students in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties for study in theater and the performing arts.

Currently, the program disburses funds to schools or their foundations or other organizations. They, in turn, select the student recipients based on school and state-approved guidelines.

Schools throughout South Florida are selected on a rotating basis,  including through multi-school scholarship programs such as Broward County's Arts for the Future scholarships, by the Carbonell Awards board of trustees.

Funds are disbursed to high schools for any senior  who plans to attend an accredited junior college, college or university in the U.S. or abroad. Funds disbursed to a college or university are to be made available to any freshman to assist with their remaining freshman year or for continuing study.

Scholarships awarded through respective schools or organizations may be given to a single student, or split into several awards but none less than $1,000 per student.

Upon final determination of recipient(s), the scholarship monies are to be placed in a student aid account at the college or  university of choice upon enrollment, to be debited by the student for educational expenses, and room and board.

Requirements

High school: Scholarships shall be made available to high school seniors attending accredited schools in South Florida, for any accredited college or university of their choice.

Monies shall be disbursed to the high school (or the school foundation or a similar organization authorized by and acting on behalf of the respective school or school system) on condition that the individual scholarship recipient(s) be determined in accordance with established school and/or state guidelines and practices for financial need, academic ability, performance and promise, plus the student’s natural artistic ability and promise.

The high school shall transfer the funds at the appropriate time to the college or university of the student’s choice, along with a copy of the guidelines and a Carbonell Awards Scholarship Award Report. If the student fails to enroll in college, the high school may award the scholarship to another deserving candidate.

College/University:  Scholarships shall be made available to freshmen attending accredited schools in South Florida, for continuing education at that institution.

Schools shall receive a copy of the guidelines and a Carbonell Awards Scholarship Award Report. Monies shall be made available to a community college, college or university (or the school foundation or similar organization authorized by and acting on behalf of the respective school or school system) on condition that the individual scholarship recipient(s) be determined in accordance with established school and/or state guidelines and practices for financial need, academic ability, performance and promise, plus the student’s natural artistic ability and promise.

In the event that the student recipient is unwilling or unable to use the full scholarship, he/she shall have one year’s grace period to re-qualify or transfer. If not, the remaining monies may then be placed in the college or foundation’s general scholarship program and pooled with other funds for redistribution in accordance with school guidelines.

In the event of misuse of funds, the Carbonell Awards may assist in their recovery for redistribution by the school.
